ATHEX headed south yesterday but outperformed the European stock markets. In more detail, the General Index fell by 0.48% at 1,301.34 units (FTSE Large Cap: -0.59%, FTSE Mid Cap: -0.73%, Banks Index: -1.66%) and the traded value was shaped at EUR 72.1m, up from Tuesday’s EUR 69.2m. We expect ATHEX to move in line with the European stock markets.

Greece sells 3-month T-bills at 3.84%
The Greek State raised EUR 812.5m yesterday from the issuance of 13–week T-bills. In more detail, the total amount auctioned was EUR 625m, while total bids reached EUR 1,014m (1.67x coverage ratio vs. 1.85x in November) for an interest rate of 3.84% (vs. 3.88% in the previous auction).

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appointed yesterday Mr. Michalis Chrysohoidis as new citizen protection minister, replacing Mr. Oikonomou, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis was moved from the Labor to the Health Ministry, and finally Mrs Domna Michailidou, who was deputy education minister, will be replacing Georgiadis.

Energy Sector || Greek retail electricity market (EnexGroup) – December 2023
Greek retail electricity market: IPPs market share dropped to 43.89% in December 2023 (according to data from Greek Energy Exchange – EnEx). Other key statistics: a) monthly average clearing Price at EUR 102.2/MWh, down by EUR 3.2/MWh m-o-m and sharply lower by EUR 174.7/MWh y-o-y, b) total Electricity demand at 4,642/GWh, down by 3.4% y-o-y. In more detail, GEKTERNA’s Heron ranks first with 10.74%, Mytilineos’ Protergia follows with 9.32% (13.53% combined with the recently acquired Watt & Volt and Volterra), ELPE’s Elpedison with 6.19% and MOH’s NRG with 5.68%. As a result, PPC’s retail market share in December 2023 rose slightly by 3.96% m-o-m to 56.11%. Regarding the Generation mix traded in the Day-Ahead Market, RES ranks first with 31% of total (vs. 40% in November), Natural Gas follows with 29% (vs. 25% in the previous month), Hydro Plants 10% (6%), Lignite and Oil-Powered Plants contributed 6% (10%) and 3% (2%) respectively and finally, Imports 21% (17%).
Athens Airport releases strong passenger traffic for December
Athens International Airport (AIA) released its passenger traffic data for December 2023, according to which total passenger traffic up by 13.6% compared to the corresponding month in 2019 (+17.1% y-o-y), with international traffic up by 10.7% vs. 2019 (+19.4% YoY) and domestic traffic also up 11.9% vs. 2019 (+20.8% y-o-y). For 2023, total passenger traffic was up by 24.0% y-o-y to 28.2m passengers, standing also 10.2% above 2019 levels, while international traffic was up by 8.8% vs. 2019 and by 26.4% y-o-y to 19.4m passengers.
Athens Airport IPO in early February (Press)
According to Kathimerini, the IPO of the Athens Airport will take place in the first half of February, subject to necessary law amendments next week.
Northern Macedonia cancels the tender for large Hydro plant awarded to the PPC/Archirodon JV (press)
According to Energypress.gr, the republic of Northern Macedonia will cancel the tender for the construction and operation of a 330MW Hydro plant in the country, for which the PPC and Archirodon partnership was declared preferred investor. The Hydro plant was in line with PPC’s strategic targets, and would offer differentiation and integration benefits the South Eastern Europe, yet this development has no immediate impact on PPC, as it was planned to commence operations no sooner than 2028.
Lamda Malls return share capital of EUR 38.3m to the parent company
Lamda Malls, a Lamda Development subsidiary, proceeded with a capital return in cash to the Company of EUR 38.3m, with the simultaneous cancellation of equal number of shares of nominal value of EUR 1 each. Following the completion of the aforementioned share capital reduction, the Company’s participation in the share capital of LAMDA MALLS is 95.32% whereas the participation of the Group’s foreign subsidiary, LAMDA DEVELOPMENT (NETHERLANDS) B.V. is 4.68%.
Athens ended the day 48bps below flat line, with small pick up in trading volumes at EUR 70m. Correction for Piraeus, down 2.6% after gaining 3% in the previous session. NBG and Eurobank both down 2.3% and 1.5% respectively. Quiet session for the non financials, with most bluechips recording marginal gains/losses, with the exception of PPC and Jumbo, down 1.8%. Another good day for HTO, up 2%.

LAMDA DEVELOPMENT
Lamda malls to proceed with a capital return of c.EUR 38m to Lamda Development.
Market Comment // Taking cues from most major EU bourses, the ASE General index finished -0.48% lower on Wednesday (at 1,301 points) as the positive momentum from expected rate cuts in 2024 began to wear off. Trade activity remained near holiday-thinned levels, reaching €72m by the close (vs. the 100-day moving average of €115m). EYDAP (-3.1%), Piraeus Bank (-2.61%) and NBG (-2.35%) led laggards, followed by PPC, Jumbo, Ellaktor, Eurobank, Quest Holdings and ATHEX (on >1% losses). On the other hand, Elvalhalcor (+6.84%) and Viohalco (+4.54%) outshone gainers, followed by Lamda Development and OTE (on >2% gains) and Autohellas and Aegean Airlines (on >1% gains). EU futures point to a negative opening today as yesterday’s Fed minutes reinforced somewhat the higher-for-longer rates narrative.
Politics // The PM announced yesterday a mini cabinet reshuffle, with the main changes related to the ministries of Citizen Protection (following recent increases in violence in sporting events) and Health. Both positions will be assumed by experienced officials who have previously served at these posts, namely M. Chrysohoidis (Civil Protection) and A. Georgiadis (Health). There have been no changes in key ministries.
AIA – Air traffic // AIA will hold an EGM on 12th Jan for decisions related to its upcoming listing at ATHEX. Meanwhile AIA passenger traffic in 2023 shaped 10.0% above 2019 levels (+24% yoy), with passengers reaching 28.17m. Across the segments, international passengers increased to 19.4m (+8.8% vs 2019 and +26.4% yoy) while domestic passengers shaped at 8.8m (+13.3% vs 2019 and +18.9% yoy).
Lamda // Lamda is proceeding with the transformation of its subsidiary Lamda malls in view of the likely IPO of the latter in Q2’23 (aiming to raise c€150m). In that context Lamda announced the reduction of Lamda Malls share capital by €38.3m, through cancellation of shares, and will return an equal amount of cash to Lamda Development.
PPC // The public tender for the construction and operation of a 333MW Hydro park in N. Macedonia is likely to be cancelled, as per the country’s Minister of Environment. In September 2023, the consortium of PPC-Archirodon was selected as the preferred bidder, however the deal fell apart as the local govt did not agree to the bidders’ proposed change in terms.
